September 2019 Climate Action Letter

In september 2019, ca100+ sent a letter to 47 of the largest us publicly traded
companies
outlining the group’s expectation that those companies would align their
climate
lobbying with the
goals
of the paris agreement.
The letter asserted that the companies had “
significant
influence on
climate
and
energy
policies
” and that there appeared to be lobbying
activities
that were “inconsistent with addressing the risks posed by climate change. ” the letter went on to warn that lobbying activities which are inconsistent with meeting climate
goals
are an investment
risk
. It then set out a list of expectations, the “investor expectations on
corporate
climate lobbying”;
called
on companies to publicly
report
on how they were meeting these expectations; and asked the companies to establish meaningful governance of their lobbying activities, including full
public
transparency.

Youth online activism has been another
large
part
of the success story. Online campaigners can reap enormous awards for less input compared to traditional
means
of activism such as protesting in
person
and letter writing. Online activists can reach more
people
and do not need to go through traditional
media
channels. This is particularly beneficial for children and young people, who have a lot less access to the adult spheres of
public
forums (such as news
media
outlets and engagement with politicians). Not only this, but with online
activity
available to them, young activists do not have to operate through traditional organisations for
political
change

map, a simple x-y axis chart widely used in all kinds of grassroots campaigning. The purpose is to figure out how to reach a clear and specific end goal, and come up with an actual path for reaching it. Take what a

of amazon workers did in 2019, when 900 employees signed a petition and ultimately walked out on the job over three demands: that amazon stop donating to politicians and
groups
that reject climate science, stop allowing
oil
companies
to use its cloud computing
services
for
oil
extraction, and accelerate its
net
-zero climate ambitions to 2030.

finally agreed to host a briefing by the chief scientific adviser for mps and ministers. Such radical forms of protest have historically been deployed by
social
movements to cast a spotlight on desperate situations, when conventional legal and
political
responses have been deemed woefully inadequate.

activism related to climate change began in the late 1980s, when
major
environmental
organizations
became involved in the discussions about climate, mainly in the unfccc framework. Whereas
environmental
organizations
had previously primarily been engaged at the domestic
level
, they began to increasingly engage in
international
campaigning. The largest transnational climate change coalition, climate action network , was founded in 1992. Its
major
members
include
greenpeace, wwf, oxfam and friends of the
earth
. Climate justice now! and climate justice action , two major coalitions, were founded in the lead-up to the 2009 copenhagen summit.

nations
climate change conference last week, greta thunberg said change wouldn’t be coming from within the summit’s halls. “that is not leadership—this is leadership,” thunberg said of, and to, her fellow
activists
. “this is what leadership looks like. ”the way many environmental campaigners,
including
thunberg, see it, they are the ones who helped
create
the space for
governments
to take more decisive action on climate change—an issue that has attracted growing levels of
concern
across the
world
’s advanced economies ,
including
from a majority of people in the
united
states
.

Why the
focus
on
activism
in particular, and not just a class about teaching climate change?
we know from environmental education
research
that knowledge is not enough to inspire people to act sustainably. My own
research
has shown that asking students to engage in environmental
action
helps young people see themselves as environmental actors, furthering environmental identity. Furthermore, climate change is such an urgent crisis, teachers need to engage with it in a way that inspires students to act now to make changes in their
communities
and country. To build agency and
activism
for my students, the fourth
credit
hour of the course asks students to engage in activism by creating and facilitating a workshop for k-12 teachers on climate change.
